Raza (Ahmad) Rumi is a Pakistani author, columnist, Op-ed writer, journalist, editor, blogger, and analyst.Currently he is affiliated with Jinnah Institute, a public policy think tank located in Islamabad. He also edits weekly The Friday Times, writes columns for leading Pakistani newspapers and journals; and is a well-known commentator on politics and culture. Earlier, Raza worked as a governance expert for the Asian Development Bank, the United Nations Mission in Kosovo and the Government of Pakistan ((as an officer of the Pakistan Administrative Service). His first book ‘Delhi by Heart: Impressions of a Pakistani Traveller’ has recently been published by Harper Collins.Raza has been contributing regularly for the Pakistani weekly The Friday Times, Express Tribune, The News and Daily DAWN on myriad topics such as politics, foreign policy, history, arts, literature and society.Jahane Rumi started as a blog and now a personal a website devoted to Sufi thought, the arts, literature, and cultures of South Asia. Raza also blogs at cyber-magazines Pak Tea House & Lahore Nama; and compiles the Development Industry blog . He is also a self-taught painter and his works can be seen at the online Saatchi Gallery. - Early career: He started his career in the Government of Pakistan as an officer of the administrative services. In 1994, he stood first in the competitive examination held each year for recruitment into the superior civil services. As a government official he served in Sargodha, Sahiwal, Rawalpindi and Gujranwala Districts. He was Assistant Commissioner, sub divisional magistrate of Murree Hills. In 2000, he was selected by the United Nations Mission in Kosovo as a Civil Affairs Officer and for other Municipal administration assignments. In 2002, he joined the Asian Development Bank.[8] – headquartered in Manila, Philippines – as a Governance Specialist. During this time Raza worked on Asia-Pacific governance and capacity development issues and also fostered the Network for Asia Pacific Schools & Institutes of Governance (NAPSIPAG).
- Journalism/Writing: In 2008, Raza returned to Pakistan on a sabbatical and joined the The Friday Times,[9] as a features editor and started writing for the Pakistani and regional newspapers. Shortly, he was also given the charge of news desk and he was the news and features editor of the publication for a few years. He is still on the editorial board of The Friday Times and works as the consulting/commissioning editor. Since the start of Express Tribune[10] Raza has been a regular columnist. In addition, he regularly contributes to the weekly magazine of the The News International . His commentaries and reports are widely noted. For TFT he has written numerous features on Pakistan’s culture, history, arts, literature and politics.
- Broadcast journalism: Since 2010, Raza has been a regular commentator on Pakistani television. In 2013 he started hosting a current affairs talk show on Capital TV entitled Seedhi Baat.[11] In January 2014 he joined Express News where he was hosting a current affairs show ‘Khabar Sey Agay'[12] (beyond news). His TV commentaries included direct critique of Pakistani state and its inability to combat extremism, the spread of extremism, economic and social issues and about the issues that afflict the evolution of parliamentary democracy in Pakistan.
- Social Media: Raza is one of the first few bloggers from Pakistan. He started to blog in 2006 and developed a blog, later turned into a personal website, Jahane Rumi,[13] which archives all his writings and also covers the arts, literature and cultures of South Asia. In 2007, Raza founded a webzine – Pak Tea House[14] that was a way to give voice to young Pakistanis who wanted to converse on national and international issues. PTH has since then become a platform for introducing new writers. Some of its editors and contributors are now well known columnists and commentators in the mainstream media. In addition, Raza also set up a culture blog Lahore Nama [15] to document the history and heritage of Lahore. In 2011, Lahore Nama won the best culture blog award at a competition. He also set up Development Industry and Pakistan Policy Group blogs. Since 2010, he is also active on Twitter and has been noted as one of the top tweeters from Pakistan.[16] As an active social media consumer/user he was involved in the organization of social media summits in 2010 and 2011 and a regular participant and speaker at social media seminars.
- Policy engagement & public affairs: In 2012, Raza Rumi joined the Jinnah Institute[17] – a public policy think tank – as its director. He managed the institute until end of 2013 and currently is a senior fellow there. At the institute he was involved in India-Pakistan Track II dialogue, organizing public debates on democracy, federalism and reforms in education sector. His publications in Jinnah Institute’s reports on Extremism include a long paper on Sectarianism and another one on the plight of Pakistan’s Ahmaddiya community. Since 2012, Raza has been a member of various regional and national peace initiatives, a regular speaker at civil society symposia and also consulted by national and international organizations on Pakistan’s politics and policy issues. He is also a member of the task force on civil service reform constituted by the Planning Commission of Pakistan.
- As an acknowledgement of his writings arts and literature, Raza Rumi has been involved in the organization and conduct of Karachi Literature Festival[18] since its inception in 2009. He also spoke at Lahore Literature Festival 2014. As member of the Foundation of SAARC Writers and Literature (FOSWAL), Raza has been a regular speaker and moderator of events at the annual conferences since 2008. Policy expertise: Since 2008, Raza has also advised federal and provincial governments, international development institutions such as UNDP, World Bank, DFID, etc. on policy reform, governance, capacity development, social development among other areas. His substantive role was in the implementation of a Punjab public resource management program (2008-2011) and AITEBAR – a peace building programme in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and FATA (2012–13). He has also provided technical and advisory services in Mongolia, Nepal, Cambodia and worked in Bangladesh, India, Bhutan, Nepal, Indonesia, Malaysia etc. as an ADB staffer.

- Analyst and Express News show “Khabar Se Agay” anchor Raza Rumi, came under a gun attack in Lahore on Friday evening, in which his driver, Mustafa, was killed and his guard injured.This is the fifth attack on Express Media group.Rumi, who had just completed his show and had left the studio, said that his car was fired upon near Raja market on Ferozpur road in Lahore.
