Abid Hassan Minto aka Abid Minto is a renowned communist and the leading figure of leftist and progressive forces of the left. In 2012 November 2012, the Awami Party, Labour Party and Workers Party merged to form the Awami Workers Party (AWP) and Abid Minto was elected its first president. AWP represents the main left-wing forces of Pakistan. Born in Muree in 1935, Minto joined the Communist Party of Pakistan (CPP) as early as in 1949. He is also is a constitutional expert and senior lawyer of the Supreme Court of Pakistan. In his younger days Minto was an active trade unionist and organised the Military Engineering Service Workers Union. He worked for the Attock Oil Company Workers Union in Rawalpindi and the Railway Workers Union which was led by Mirza Muhammad Ibrahim, a veteran trade union leader of South Asia. Minto was a member of the Central Executive of the Pakistan Trade Union Federation (affiliated with the World Federation of Trade Unions) from 1967–1986. Minto joined the Progressive Writers Association (PWA) in 1949. He is a literary critic. His first essay “The Issue of Language in Pakistan” was published in 1951 in the literary journal Adb e Latif (ادب لطیف). Other essays by him, later published as a collection “Nuqta e Nazar” originally appeared in the view point. Abid Hassan Minto still believes that the feudalist structure is haunting the real social and political potential of Pakistan. He thinks that without providing relief to the working class, the overall progress being claimed by the present government is meaningless. He welcomes the peace process with neighbors that should lead to the reduction of military expenditures in future. For offsetting the pressure of globalization forces, he favors promoting the idea of regional economic cooperation in the fields of trade and investment among countries facing the same problems. As a Kashmiri himself, Minto has always favored a solution of the Kashmir problem that satisfies the wishes of the Kashmiri people. His party has developed liaison with the left parties of India to promote the current peace process between the two neighbors according to the best interests of the people of south Asia. Abid Minto is known as one of the leading lawyers and constitutional experts of Pakistan.
